The Art of Layering...

Today I want to talk about the art of layering.  It's something I've always loved doing, and its a great way to be creative with your outfits and show less skin (if, like me you don't want to show too much!).  I love that with the simple addition of one piece, I can create an entirely different outfit!  I can pair a T-shirt with a jacket, then add a scarf, then a necklace, and now I can take that combo and add another jacket or another shirt or two!  It's easy and fabulous!

I don't like to bare my arms, so layering is the perfect way for me to do that and still look trendy!  Just recently I wore a sparkly metallic gray tank with a fitted black blazer and jet beaded necklace; I also have a leather dress that is sleeveless and wear a black long-sleeved tee underneath and I love the way it looks.  I also love layering with a vest, it covers up a multitude of sins and is very on trend. There is so much you can do with layering, but - and you know there is always a but - be careful with how you layer so that you don't end up looking frumpy instead of fabulous!

Here are some of my tips on how to layer successfully...

1.  Stick to the same color family.  Whether you're going to go black, brown, blue or pink, try to stick with colors that can all fit in the same color family.  Going crazy with the colors may leave you looking like a clown instead of a fashionista!

2.  Think shape.  Layering should not diminish the body's natural shape.  It shouldn't look like you're walking around in a sack!  Try a belt or a fitted jacket to give some dimension to the outfit.

3.  Go beyond the moment.  Maybe you are cold when dressing, but are going to be stepping into a warm environment.  Make sure layers can be taken off and added as needed without causing embarrassment as to what's underneath.

4.  Be creative.  Layering, whether it's three necklaces or two shirts and a sweater, is all about creativity.  Think outside the box.  What can be paired together?  Experiment with various options.
