SAG Awards Fashion Review 2013

Last night saw the second big awards ceremony of the year with the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, and celebrities rocked the red carpet showcasing the best trends as seen on the Spring runways.

I loved seeing all the beautiful gowns, jewels, and glamorous actors from the big & small screen.  I have to say some of the outfits were amazing, and some did not hit the mark.  So here is my review of the fashions, both good and bad, from last night's SAG Awards!

Jennifer Lawrence was a winner on and off the red carpet, wearing a navy blue Christian Dior dress that some believed split as she was ascending the stairs to accept the award (oops!).  Whether it did or not, she looked amazing!

The major trend of the night was black & white, showcased by designers like Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors & Alexander Wang for the Spring 2013 season.  January Jones adopted this trend in Prabal Gurung, and looked amazing in this very modern, edge dress and hair. Michelle Dockery looked lovely in a vintage black Ralph Rucci gown with sheer side panels.  Julianne Moore wore a black & white flowered Chanel gown which I have to say I was disappointed with.  She always looks amazing, but this time the top of the dress looked ill-fitting.  Julianna Marguiles also wore Ralph Rucci in a dress that was very retro.  Claire Danes rocked a black & white trend in a one-sleeve black gown by Givenchy with white geometric detailing.

Some starlets opted for just black, like Anne Hathaway in her Giambattista Valli gown with sheer decolletage and sheer tulle gown revealing a short skirt underneath.  She looked very chic and glam.  Tina Fey dazzled in a black heart-shaped strapless gown by Oscar de la Renta.  Another funny lady, Julie Bowen wore the black leather trend wearing a dress by Australian designer Johanna Johnson with cap sleeves. Mad Men's Elizabeth Moss channeled the black trend wearing a knee length Dolce & Gabanna dress. One of my favorites of the night was Jaime Alexander in a beautiful black geometric gown by Marc Bouwer with plunging neckline.

Navy was also popular on the red carpet as worn by Jennifer Lawrence, Amanda Seyfriend in ZacPosen and a beautiful Vivienne Westwood gown worn by Nicole Kidman.

On the opposite spectrum, some leading ladies looked angelic in white like Kerry Washington in a jeweled corset dress by Rodarte.  I loved the top half of this dress, but was not too keen on the lace at the back of the dress.  Sofia Vergara showed off her amazing curves in a white Donna Karan.  I was a little disappointed with Naomi Watt's Marchesa gown - I think it was too pale for her coloring.

Some actresses opted for color like Jessica Chastain in a red Alexander McQueen dress.  I was not a huge fan of this dress, I thought it was too bold for her skin and hair color. Sally Field looked age appropriate in a purple J. Mendel dress, and Lea Michele wore an electric pink Valentino gown.  I was not a fan of her pink dress - it was just all too much and her hair should have been worn up. Freida Pinto also wore pink, but pulled it off in Roland Mouret.  Marion Cotillard wore a white & blue Christian Dior dress and Jennifer Garner was in a gold sequined Oscar de la Renta strapless dress.

Other celebs worth mentioning are Helen Hunt, who shimmered in a metallic silver gown by Romona Keveza, and Nina Debrev who also wore pink and made it work in her Elli Saab dress.

My big miss of the night has to go to Rose Byrne in a Valentino gown that was just plain awful.  I don't know what she, or her stylist, were thinking!  And my other big miss goes to Sigourney Weaver in a black dress that was drab and unflattering!

The Square Neckline...

I've always believed that the right neckline is key to whatever we are wearing.  Wearing the wrong neckline can be unflattering and make you look frumpy if you're not careful, and no-one wants that!  So I am very pleased that one of my favorite necklines has made a comeback - and that is the square neckline!

It used to be the go-to neckline for the Hollywood bombshell's of the '50s - and it's easy to see why.  The geometry is flattering, offering a teasing glimpse of cleavage as well as a perfect frame for a pretty face.  It's right at any angle.

If you're having a night out and are wearing a fitted sheath dress, this square-cut look will definitely add some va va voom to your look!  Halle Berry pulled this off perfectly recently in a simple black Roland Mouret dress, and Gwyneth Paltrow looked great in a white Tom Ford dress.

Take a look at how you can make this work for you...

Golden Globe Awards Fashion Review 2013

Award season kicked off last night with the Golden Globe Awards, and I was glued to the set watching the red carpet to see what all the celebs would be wearing.  It was a great night for fashion, and I have to say many celebs that looked amazing!  There were no terrible outfits like previous years, though definitely a few mis-steps and some predictable choices.  Red was in abundance, as well as black & gold, and nudes.

So here is my synopsis of the hits and misses of the night...please feel free to comment on who were your favorite fashionistas of the night!

Some of my favorites of the night included Julianne Moore in custom-made Tom Ford;  here is an example of a mature woman who knows how to look fashionable and classy.  Her black and white dress looked amazing!  I loved Kerry Washington in her Miu Miu dress;  Kerry has been quite the fashionista of late wearing some edgy outfits, and she definitely pulled it off in this look last night. I thought Nicole Richie looked great in her blue Naeem Khan dress - I usually don't like such a covered up dress on such a young woman, but she made it look fresh and modern.  I liked Sienna Miller in her very retro Erdem separates. I loved Katherine McPhee in her black dress.  Despite the plunging neckline (which I'm not usually a huge fan of), she looked chic and sexy and her body looks amazing right now.  Clare Danes looked lovely in her red Versace dress, and considering she had a baby just a month ago, her body looked great!  I loved Lucy Lu in her floral Carolina Herrera dress.  I know this look may not be to everyone's taste, but I think she looked fabulous, and this dress was different and current. Naomi Watts looked lovely in her wine colored Zac Posen dress, and Emily Blunt looked beautiful in a gold cut-out sequinned dress.  I liked Jennifer Lawrence's blood-orange Dior dress, but I was not keen on the bust detail. But apart from that I think she looked beautiful.  I also liked Kate Hudon's black & gold dress, but she should have had her hair up as having her hair down covered the detail on the neck area.  My favorite of the night will go to Michelle Dockery (of Downton Abbey fame).  She looked absolutely gorgeous in a gold and white dress that was sleek and chic and so flattering on her slender figure.  Other shout outs that I liked include Julianna Margulies in a black lace Gucci, Amy Adams in a nude Marchesa creation & Olivia Munn in Georgio Armani.

Some of the looks I was not so crazy about include....Anne Hathaway in white Chanel.  I liked the dress but it is not the right color for her pale skin.  Also it looked ill fitting, a little big for her.  Lena Dunham unfortunately got it very wrong in her black dress - again it was ill fitting around the bust-line and was too severe and aging for a young girl.  Also she could not walk in her heels - she looked very uncomfortable walking on and off the stage to collect her awards!  Sofia Vergara is a gorgeous and sexy woman - but her dress was so predictable - sparkly & tight!  Change it up Sofia, we're bored with the same look!  I did not like Amanda Seyfried's Givenchy dress.  The color was completely wrong for her pale skin and it was not flattering on her at all.  She looked washed out!  I was disappointed in Adele's dress choice.  She is a beautiful woman, and she is a curvy woman too, but her black dress was way too covered up.  She could have lowered the neckline just a little - she was so covered up that it looked frumpy.  I was not a fan of Jessica Chastain's Calvin Klein seafoam colored dress - again, wrong color for a pale skin, and her hair was not styled well.  But I do love her!  I was not a fan of dresses by Jennifer Lopez (too much going on everywhere, she needs to tone it down), or Julianna Hough in her Monique Lhullier dress - again, way too much going on.  And Rachel Weisz disappointed in her black sheer polka dot dress - terrible!

Here are some of the pics of the Golden Globes fashions last night.  Judge for yourself on who were your favorites and your misses....
