Today I want to talk about building the ultimate wardrobe by focusing on what I call the ultimate classics or timeless staples.
Once you have your closet essentials down, it's worth stocking up on pieces that will always look great, no matter what the current trends may be. Think versatility, longevity and everlasting appeal!
1. White tees - they are the all-American standard! You'll always find uses for basis tees, whether paired with denim on weekends or with a dressy skirt for an edgy look. They're also the groundwork for layering.
2. Cashmere cardigans - a button up sweater offers the most adaptability; perfect with a pencil skirt for work, sexy at night as a cocktail-dress topper, and a great layering piece for more casual looks. Classic colors - camel, navy, black and gray will inevitably get more wear than brights or patterns, though personally I love the brights too!
3. White jeans - one of my personal favorites and an item I wear all the time, white jeans are a more glamorous take on basic jeans. All they need is a cashmere V-neck on top for a classic, clean look, or I like to wear them with a bright tee and a fitted blazer. Love this look!
4. Trousers - invest in a pair of classic slouchy pants. They're all about refined ease. Wear them with a classic soft blouse, a crisp button-up or thin knit. A good pair of pants can be worn year round and will never be outdated.
5. Shift dress - Think Jackie O's simple, pared-down and polished. This style couldn't be easier to wear, working with a blouse or tee under, with flats or pumps. This is a no-brainer for every woman's wardrobe!
6. Tuxedo - this is what I call an alternative to the LBD! With the allure of being covered up and the whole masculine-feminine mix, a tux at night can be totally sexy. Bonus : it can be extremely flattering for all body types!
7. Boucle Jacket - Coco Chanel made this a wardrobe must! Worn with a matching skirt or with jeans (my preference!), the tweedy jacket, boxy or fitted, adds instant class! I like to throw on several strands of pearls too for that extra pizzaz!
8. Trench Coat - this is the item loved by all women. Young, old, curvy, slim, conservative or edgy! It's a versatile piece that is also practical, glamorous and cool! Whether you wear it over jeans or a fancy dress, you're sure to look sophisticated.
9. Camel overcoat - a coat is the first and last thing people see on you, so it's worth finding a plush one, but keeping it sleek and classic increases its life span and wearability. You can't go wrong with a cashmere coat in deep tan, whether it's a wrap version or double or single-breasted. It works for day and night, for work and weekends. Think of it as an investment!
So ladies, these are the staples that you should have for building your ultimate wardrobe, and I'm guessing that many of you have most of these items, right? If not, think about investing in some of these things as they really will make a difference in your wardrobe and how you put outfits together.
