Five figure-flattering tips...

We all have good and bad days when it comes to how we feel about ourselves.  January and February are usually tough months to get through.  We've all over-indulged over the holidays and most likely gained a couple of pounds, and we are usually our own worse critics, right?  So for those days when you look in the mirror and you feel a little blah, here are 5 figure- flattering tips to help you feel better until those extra holiday pounds you gained have gone.

  1. Consider the fabric - structured materials like wool or cotton create a smooth look that's more forgiving of any bumps and bulges.  Pieces with anywhere between 1 and 2 percent lycra will shape your figure without being overly snug.  Clingy fabrics like lightweight silk or chiffon are good if you want to show off your body, but be careful.  They can also highlight areas you want to conceal.
  2. Find your best fit - Body-skimming looks are the most flattering.  Skip clothing that's too tight or requires a lot of tugging and adjusting.  Pants with whiskering at the front or shirts that pull at the back are signs of a bad fit.
  3. Think about proportion - volume is great for camouflaging certain body parts - just be sure to offset breezier pieces with something tailored, like a flowy shirt with slim-fitting pants.  Outfits that are blousy on top and bottom will make you look bigger than you really are.
  4. Use color and print strategically - dark hues can help areas appear slimmer, while bright shades and patterns play them up.  The scale of the print can enhance or minimize your proportions - a larger pattern tends to look best on fuller hips, while smaller prints complement more petite frames.
  5. Finish with the right accessories - a streamlined pair of heels elongates legs.  In a nude hue, they can also give the illusion of thinner calves and ankles.  Waist-cinching belts create an hourglass silhouette.  Choose wider styles to break up a longer torso and skinnier belts to lengthen a shorter one.
