Cannes Film Festival Fashions

The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most famous film festivals that occurs every year.  Celebrities flock to this event, and it's a place to see and be seen!  Apart from the great movies that are shown at Cannes every year, the fashion is something that everyone looks forward to.  This year was no exception, and some of my favorites in the fashion stakes this year included Carey Mulligan, Emma Watson, Nicole Kidman, & Jennifer Lawrence.

Take a look at some of the amazing looks that hit the red carpet at the festival this year and judge for yourself who were the hits and who missed the mark...

Want to rock the modern retro trend? Here's how...

Thanks to The Great Gatsby, it's no surprise that the fashion trend at the top of everyone's minds right now is modern retro.  Don't worry, you don't necessarily have to be a fan of the roaring 20s or flappers to rock this look!  From the bold geometric prints of the 60s to the high-waisted bikini bottoms made popular in the 40s and 50s, here are some ways to inject a little bit of retro style into your modern wardrobe.

There's no denying the fact that this summer it's all about brights.  Instead of decking yourself out in obnoxious 80s head-to-toe neon, be more selective about the pop of color you add to your ensembles.  For instance, think bold accessories paired with a neutral dress or an eye-popping skirt styled with a crisp white top.  Remember - the key here is not to blind people!

1. Balance neons with neutrals.

One of my favorite things to wear is polka dots!  I have polka dot pants, jackets, tops etc, and love this playful look! And I do believe this trend is here to stay.  So how do you make polka dots look modern exactly?  It's easy!  Avoid polka dot printed skirts and dresses, and sport them in unexpected ways instead.  I'm obsessed with polka dot skinny jeans and can't get enough of sheer polka dot button-up blouses.

2. Get playful with polka dots.

You don't have to be Daisy Buchanan to pull off a glitzy glam party dress!  Whether it's for a night out on the town or even an upcoming summer wedding, toss on a sexy sequin mini dress in a neutral color to channel your inner flapper girl!

3. Toss on a chic sequin mini dress.

Now that spring is finally in full swing, it's time to break out those cute midriff-baring crop tops! (Note:  this look is definitely for the younger set!).  If you don't mind stepping outside your comfort zone a bit this season, opt for a short shirt with a loud geometric print.  To tone it down, pair yours with solid high-waisted shorts, or sport it over a non-busy bikini for a retro-inspired look that's totally with the times.

4. Rock a bright geometric print crop top.

Nothing says retro like a high-waisted bikini!  Take a trip back in time while still keeping your swimwear current with a high-waisted bikini bottom that has modern touches.  For example, this simple black bottom features sheer panels at the sides, making it feel so right now.

5. Buy a high-waisted bikini with modern touches.

Often rocked by the fashionistas Olivia Palermo and Nicole Richie, there's nothing I personally love more than a pair of super cool cat eye shades!  They're right on trend this summer so finding a pair should be easy-peasy!  To keep things fresh, I recommend trying some oversized feline-inspired frames in a fresh, fun color.

6. Invest in some cool, oversized cat eye sunglasses.

Come see me for a styling session at White House Black Market...

As some of you are aware, I work part-time in retail as a stylist.  It's a great way to meet new clients, and get my name out there even more to build up my styling business.  I am grateful for all the clients I have met through my work in retail, and for the trust they have had in me to allow me to work with them.  It's never easy to allow someone into your 'safe' world and have them try to change what you're so used to doing.  But the reward for me is seeing the transition in my clients when they have that moment when they look in the mirror and I can tell they feel differently (in a good way!) about the way they look.

I wanted to let my clients (and supporters) know that I recently made a move to White House Black Market.  I have been there just over a week, but already I'm thoroughly enjoying what I'm doing there, my co-workers are great, and I've worked with some great clients.  Please come and visit me there - I'd be more than happy to work with you on finding that special outfit for work, play, or whatever the occasion.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the WHBM brand, please take a look at the images below to get an idea of what we offer.  I work in the Outlet branch of the store (the Tanger Outlets in Washington), and the product is a little different from the front-line store, but we also get clothes from the front-line store as well,.  You will find the clothes at WHBM classic, chic and timeless.  The quality is high, and the styles for women who are modern chic.  Whether you are looking for an interview outfit, a dress for a wedding or bridal shower, or a more casual weekend look, you will find it here!  I usually work Friday afternoons and evening as well as weekends.  Come see me and try something new!  If you like you can call me directly to arrange a time to shop when I am working so that I can help you.  Call me on 412-996 5200 now!

Here are some of the looks you will find at WHBM....
