Crochet looks make a comeback!

When I was a little girl, my mother and grandmother used to wile away the hours crocheting.  They would make all kinds of things including blankets, table runners and even the odd sweater!  I used to tease them that it was old-fashioned and dated.  That was in the '70s, when crochet, an old-fashioned 'homemaker's art' was having a hippie revival.  Now it's back - again!  In sleek, chic dresses and cute shorts and tops that pair well with summer linens or washed denim.

Why I love this look...

  • Crochet still has a retro magic!
  • Crocheted clothing and accessories are perfect for summer.  Their open weave makes them cool in every sense of the word.
  • I love how each generation has put its own spin on this craft.
How to pull off this look...
  • Many crochet knits are revealing, which is why they look so cute over a bikini.  Away from the beach or pool, be sure to choose garments with a tighter weave or a lining.  Another option - layer them over an opaque slip or a bandeau.
  • Crocheted accessories can be earthy, like the sandals, or romantic like the necklace.  Either would work with a modern and simple T-shirt dress.
  • Because the patterns are quite intricate, it's best to wear crocheted items with plainer fabrics, like denim, untextured linen, or cotton poplin.
Crochet through the years...

'60s - Twiggy
Often sporting tights, miniskirts, or groovy dresses, the British model exemplified the swinging sixties.

'70s - Ali MacGraw
Known for her boho-chic way of dressing, the Love Story actress wears a crocheted cap and cool choker to the Academy Awards.

Here are some of the different ways you can wear crochet fashions and accessories...
