Today I met with Jordan, a client who has subsequently become a friend, for a 'Business Style Session'. Jordan used to work in Fashion Retail, but recently made a career change, and as such required a more professional, business-like wardrobe. Knowing that Jordan has an eye for fashion and a creative edge to her style choices, I wanted to make sure I kept true to her style aesthetic and keep her new business wardrobe professional but still fun and creative. I also wanted to make sure we were able to choose what I like to call transition pieces, items that she would be able to smoothly go from day to evening.
I took her to White House Black Market, where I happen to work part-time as a Stylist, and the reason I chose to take her there is because they have a great selection of clothing that are well-made, tailored and yet also fun and different.
The key thing in building a business wardrobe is starting out with the basic staples. That is, a couple of jackets, skirts and pants. Once you've got these key pieces you can build your wardrobe and create a number of different looks just by changing up the staples. All we needed to do was add a few tops, and we added a couple of dresses too for good measure!
Take a look at what we put together for her new business wardrobe. I think you'll agree that she looks fabulous!

We started out with a basic black cropped blazer & black A-line skirt. The jacket had a leather piping detail around the collar. I added a pink skinny belt to add a pop of color. These basics can be used to create many different looks. |
Here we have a black cropped tuxedo pant with an off-white top with black pattern. The satin stripe down the side of the pant added a luxe feel. Add a blazer and you have a great work look. Minus the blazer she's ready for happy hour! |
Same look, different angle |
The same black tuxedo pant was paired with a floral bustier. Again, adding the blazer makes this look office-ready. |
The same outfit with the jacket looks completely different but totally appropriate for the office! |
The same outfit just paired with a different bustier. The great thing about these bustiers, other than they are incredibly flattering on the female shape, is that they can be worn in a more casual way with jeans for the weekend, or dressed up with something more dressy for a night out! |
This time we swapped out the black tuxedo pant for a white pant for a more spring-like look. Gives the outfit a whole different vibe just by changing up the pants! |
Add a white jacket and voila! She's got another great office look! |
Another staple, this time a white pencil skirt, creates yet another great timeless look! |
Next we added a fun pant to create a less serious, more youthful look. |
A close up to showcase the great pattern on these fun pants. Love these! |
Another fun pant with a different print. These pants are also great to wear at the weekends with a denim jacket for a more casual look. |
A close up of this lovely print. |
I love color-blocking and think its a great way of adding something more interesting to an outfit. This color-block skirt looked great on Jordan with a simple cami and black blazer. |
Jordan loves ruffles, so I picked out this fun black & white polka dot tunic with leggings. A young and flirty outfit that can be dressed up or down to suit the occasion! |
We loved this striped dress with detailing at the waist that cinched her already tiny waist in even more! I added a skinny belt for more detailing. |
Add that jacket, and again it's a completely different look! |
We both fell in love with this amazing polka dot fitted sheath dress with cutout detail in the back. She looked amazing in this outfit! |
The back of the dress looked just as great! |
We added this white ruffle-collar jacket for a more summery look. |
Want a pop of color? Same dress, just add a red jacket for something a little more daring! |
Now this is the WHBM 'slimming' dress! Not that Jordan needs it as she's already so tiny! This dress looked great on her and accentuated her curves. Great for date night with her hubby, or add a jacket and she's office-ready! |
This jacket is one of my favorites. It's very reminiscent of the Chanel tweed jackets made famous by Coco herself! With the tweed texture and beading this is classic and timeless and will go with almost anything. |
This quilted vest was just a fun addition that can be made to look serious or fun for the weekends just by adding a plain black tee underneath. |
I love peplum and this little top didn't disappoint. Every girl should have some peplum! It's feminine and flattering on almost everyone! |
So as you can see from the pics shown, we were able to create numerous looks by getting just a few key pieces and mixing them up. We were able to stay true to Jordan's personality by adding pieces that were fun and creative. She was pleased with the final result, as indeed was I!
