Okay ladies, so today I want to talk about volume. And I don't mean the big hair type of volume either! Most of you will be aware (I hope) that voluminous coats were all over the recent runways, and you may even have one or two waiting to be worn once the temps drop far enough. But that wasn't the only way designers included excess fabric in their Fall shows. Volume was everywhere - from boxy tops, full skirts with pleats and length and layers of tulle, to wide-leg trousers, and that all-important "big" coat. The models were swimming in fabric on the runways this season, but here's the key thing - they weren't drowning in fabric, and there's a difference. And this is all down to expert styling. Alexander Wang gave us a cropped jacket to break up a full skirt; Chloe used colorblocking to keep a huge top from overwhelming; Hermes used men's styling to balance a shagadelic coat.
So - how can you include loose and voluminous pieces in your looks without looking overwhelmed? It's all about balance, something I've talked about several time before in past posts. If you're going for a high fashion moment with head-to-toe volume, use cropped lengths to add shape. Pair slimmer cuts with your outsized pieces. Don't discount boyfriend styling here too - a slightly too-big white button-up is cheeky as well as chic and can be worn as a mini dress out at night (for the younger set of course!), or tucked into high-waisted wide-leg trousers for the day (how I would wear it).
But always remember my rule ladies - if you're going to go for this voluminous look think balance, balance, balance. Volume on top means fitted on your bottom half and vice versa - otherwise you'll just look like a big, shapeless lump and I know you don't want that!
