Today I'm going to continue my piece on building the ultimate wardrobe. Last week I spoke about the key pieces every woman should have in her closet, and the pieces that women should invest in. Today I'm going to focus on the pieces you can save on, and let's face it ladies, we all like to save, right?
Luckily, when building your ultimate wardrobe, there are items you can skimp on. It's not about low quality, but about knowing you can be easy on the budget with specific pieces. So read on to find out more....
1. Jeans - hands down, people get more wear out of their jeans than any other article of clothing. But there's no need to spend big bucks on this item. Chances are you've got more than one pair of jeans, right? At least a couple of different cuts, including a pair to wear with heels and a pair to wear with flats. You won't think twice about throwing a pair of jeans in the washer and dryer if you haven't spent a fortune on them.
2. Pants - here's the reality. No-one sees your bottoms when you're sitting at a table, or behind a desk, so why spend a fortune on this item that gets so little attention? Concentrate on your top half with an exquisite top to keep all eyes up!
3. Skirts - following the same logic as pants, skirts are the second half of your outfit and are a support for your top, therefore they don't always have to be as pricey. But, unlike the pant, they have the potential to define you - so choose a shape wisely, whether it be a pencil skirt, a thigh-high, or a more demure look.
4. Button-ups - these no frill tops aren't meant to last a lifetime. White is the color of choice which means it needs to be laundered a lot. And it requires ironing to keep it neat. Therefore, the shirt gets worn out fast. Since it is best sharp and crisp, you'll want to restock often, so bear this in mind when shelling out for this item.
5. Lightweight knits - thin sweaters are ideal for layering, so it's advisable to have several. You'll use these over anything, under some things, and thrown over your shoulders when there's a chill in the air at night. Therefore you won't need heavy knits, so stick to lightweight fabrics - wool or cotton works best.
6. Tees & Tanks - this is the most obvious area where you can save money. There are plenty of brands out there offering well made tees with appropriate price tags. Look for longer styles with more layering versatility. So, when you find the best fit and fabric, stock up!
How many .....here's a breakdown of fundamentals of a well-stocked closet. This is the bare minimum, so of course there is nothing wrong with having more!
4 sweaters (2 work-worthy & 2 for weekends)
7 tees (short & long sleeves, tanks & turtlenecks)
4 coats & jackets (1 elegant coat, 1 sporty outerwear jacket, 1 classic trench & 1 day-to-night jacket)
2 tops for every skirt & pant (1 dressed up & 1 casual style)
4 pants, 4 skirts (2 office and evening appropriate & 2 informal)
1 suit (for every season, that you can wear together or apart)
5 dresses (2 for day, 1 short for cocktails, 1 long for formal, & 1 special knock-'em-dead frock!)
4 jeans (1 slim cut for a cleaner look, 1 relaxed fit fot laid-back days, 1 ankle length for flats, and 1 longer pair for higher heels).
