Fashion mistake number 4...

The fashion mistake series continues today with massive fashion mistake number 4......dressing too sexy!  This is a faux pas that goes hand in hand with mistake number 3 that I covered yesterday (dressing like a teenager).  I'm talking about mature women who want to tell the world they're still sexy and like I said yesterday, end up looking as the Brits say "mutton dressed as lamb"...and trust me, you don't want to look like that!

Too short, too tight, too much cleavage, too much midriff, too much skin = too much information!  Now, those who know me are well aware that I'm far from a prude, and I'm all about looking sexy, but after a certain age if you're not careful it will come across as tacky and not tasteful. Baring too much will NOT make a 'mature' woman look sexy OR younger!

Being sexy isn't about letting it all hang out ladies!  It's about confidence - not feeling like you have to compete with some 20-something by trying to look sexier than her.  Looking sexy after a certain age is about mystery, maturity and moderation!

I agree that baring some skin can be sexy.  But the trick is not to show everything off at once.  Stick to one area at a time to look alluring and classy.  For example, if you reveal some cleavage (and note I said some, not all!), don't show off a lot of leg (and please, no minis that are mid-thigh or higher - EVER!).  It's important to have balance, and only reveal one part subtly, never more.

Sexy also doesn't mean skintight.  It's the opposite - as skintight will only make you look bigger than you are, like a stuffed sausage!  The sexiest fit gently hugs, not sqeezes the body.  And remember, if you're going to wear something fitted on the bottom, you (usually, there are some exceptions here) need to wear somethig loose or flowy on top - and vice versa.

Fabrics also play a part in this.  Softness is key here - fabrics such as silk and cashmere are great.  Some prints like animal prints also have a sexy edge, but a little goes a long way, so don't overdo it or you'll risk looking like the cliche cougar lady, clinging to her youth.

And finally remember ladies, my favorite saying is always "less is more".......please remember this when you're over a certain age!

If you look like any of the images above, then you've got it completely wrong!  Start trying to look like some of the classier mature women below!
